NADA YOGA
The Yoga of Sound
Before the word, there is vibration.
Before vibration becomes music, there is listening.
And beyond sound, there is silence.
Nada Yoga is the ancient yogic path of consciousness through sound.
The Sanskrit word Nāda means sound, resonance or vibration. But in the yogic tradition, sound is more than something we hear. It becomes an object of meditation — a bridge between the external world and the inner landscape of consciousness.
Nada Yoga begins with a simple act:
Listening.
Not merely hearing.
Listening.
FROM OUTER SOUND TO INNER SOUND
-
AHATA NADA
Ahata Nada is the sound that is produced: the human voice, a mantra, a bell, a musical instrument, the wind, water, rhythm.
It is the world we can hear.
-
ANAHATA NADA
Anahata Nada is traditionally described as the unstruck sound — the subtle inner sound that does not arise from two physical objects meeting.
Nada Yoga uses the first as a doorway toward the second.
We begin by listening to the world.
Gradually, we begin to listen within.
SOUND AS A DOORWAY
In Nada Yoga, sound is not the destination.
Sound is the doorway.
The practice trains attention to move from the obvious toward the subtle:
Sound.
Resonance.
Inner listening.
Silence.
Awareness.
Ancient yogic texts describe Nada as a way of gathering the wandering mind. When attention becomes completely absorbed in listening, thought begins to lose its habitual movement.
What remains is presence.
THE ART OF LISTENING
The practice can begin with something extraordinarily simple.
Close your eyes.
Listen to the sounds furthest away.
Then listen to the sounds around you.
Then to the sounds closest to your body.
Listen to your breath.
And when there seems to be nothing left to hear…
continue listening.
The object gradually changes.
But the listener remains.
FROM SOUND TO SILENCE
The deepest teaching of Nada Yoga may appear paradoxical:
the Yoga of Sound ultimately leads toward Silence.
The instrument becomes quiet.
The mantra disappears.
The vibration fades.
Yet awareness remains.
And perhaps this is where real listening begins.
NADA YOGA
From sound to silence.
From listening to awareness.
